A Lovely Surprise . . .

chronic illness blog awardI’ve been very remiss, but it’s time to make up for that . . . A few weeks ago, I found a wonderful surprise in my email. Jolene, over at Graceful Agony, has awarded this blog the “One Lovely Blog Award.” I’m amazed and honored to be chosen, however, fulfilling the requirements has been rather difficult. Between them, Dominique (4Walls and a View) and Jolene had managed to pass this award to many of the blogs I follow, so I had to find 15 more blogs to pass it on to. Since Dominique also gave me this award for the new blog on my website (Transform Your Chronic Life) I told them I was going to “cheat” and use the same list for both blogs, but I lied . . . What does a “good” day look like to you?

My definition

My personal idea of a good day is one where I don’t have to go to work, and I can spend some time just doing things that make me feel better. It does NOT mean that I’m not in pain (I haven’t had a day when the pain levels were below a 4 or 5 on the pain scale in at least 5 years.) It also doesn’t mean I’m not exhausted, or that I can actually remember all the things I need to take care of without lists, notes and reminders from the people around me.

What it does mean is that the pain levels are at a 6 or below, and that I can lay down with the hot pads when I need to, or take a nap. Read the rest of this entry »

EFT and Tapping for Fibromyalgia – Do They Work?

Does it work? Yes, and no . . . Like anything else, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) has its benefits, but it is definitely not going to make your fibro go away completely. It does, however, help my symptoms and make my fibro easier to live with, so I’ve added it to the resources I use to help me cope. (Is this purely a placebo effect? I don’t really care. If I feel better, or have less pain, it’s worked for me, and I’m happy with that no matter what the mechanism is.)

I downloaded the free EFT manual from http://www.emofree.com and read the information provided, memorizing the steps needed to perform a treatment. The first symptom I tried it on was a migraine, and it worked pretty well. The first treatment eased the pain, Read the rest of this entry »

Learning to Live with Pain – Being Proactive

Have you ever watched the Discovery Channel show “Mythbusters”? They do some really interesting stuff on there, and this past Wednesday (April 28th,) they tackled a pair of “myths” about pain:

  • Women have a higher pain tolerance than men. and
  • Cursing increases pain tolerance

It was pretty interesting. They set up a bowl of ice water that was kept at just above freezing (1 degree Celcius) and attached to a timer. They then tested an equal number of men and women, seeing how long each person could keep their hand submerged. The subjects were not told that the men and women were competing, and for the first test, they were not permitted to curse while their hand was submerged. Read the rest of this entry »

8 Ways to Handle Unwanted Treatment Advice

In yesterday’s post, I talked about the people in our lives who keep pushing us to try new treatments thinking that we’ll be “CURED,” and promised you a selection of methods to deal with them. As I said in that article, none of these methods are guaranteed to work with every “helpful” person in our lives. Just like us, each person will require their own combination of methods, and some won’t stop no matter what we try.

As annoying as it can be to deal with all the time, we have to remember that our illness has affected their lives as well, and handle the behavior as gently as possible. Read the rest of this entry »

Eeeeek, the Internet is Down (and Other Random Bits)

ACCCCCCCKKKKKKK!!!! We’re offline, and it’s kind of freaking me out. I can’t get online, but am I taking advantage of that to do any of the thousand things I need to be doing? Nope. I’m not washing dishes, or sleeping, or cleaning the bathroom, or any of that. Instead, I’m sitting here obsessing about all the things I CAN’T do.

Things like updating the blog, checking my email, catching up on Farmville . . . Hell, I can’t even do laundry until I’m back online because I’m out of laundry detergent and I can’t make any because the recipe is bookmarked on the puter, not written down. I’ll be fixing THAT as soon as we’re back online, too. SOME things should NOT depend on internet access.

Oh, that reminds me. I’ve found a wonderful way to reduce the amount of time and energy I spend on personal care, too. (Plus, it’s gonna save me a TON of cash!) I was reading “A Month Without Monsanto” the other day, and someone mentioned the “No-Poo” haircare method in one of the comments. I looked it up, and it sounded interesting, so I tried it the next day. I LOVE it. No shampoo, no conditioner; and my hair was still clean, soft, and shiny after 3 days.
